Research Abstract |
The effects of multipolar interaction for the magnetic properties of cubic compounds RPd_3S_4(R : rare-earth metals) whose crystal structures have no four-fold axis have been examined by performing magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific-heat measurements and neutron-scattering experiments. Following are the results of this study. (1) TbPd_3S_4 shows magnetic-field induced antiferroquadrupolar ordering. (2) The origin for the first-order like antiferromagnetic transitions in SmPd_3S_4 and TbPd_3S_4 is the competition between the magnetic interaction and multipolar interaction. (3) Possible order parameter of the phase transition in PrPd_3S_4 is not magnetic octupole but magnetic dipole. (4) New tetragonal compounds LnRu_2X_2B(Ln=Ce, Pr, Nd、X=Al, Ga) were synthesized. These compounds show ferromagnetic transitions at rather high temperatures of approximately 10 K.
