Research Abstract |
A study of fathers whose children were diagnosed with cancer revealed that they first experienced fear of losing their child, and then tried to deal with the situation by switching to positive thinking and conscious cheerfulness. In the course of these efforts, they tended to adopt a mainly problem-focused coping strategy. The nurses in the pediatrics ward consciously offered nursing support to the fathers, using unified language and coordinated action among the nursing staff, offering information to the fathers, prompting the fathers to express their emotions, encouraging the fathers to care for their children, and voicing acknowledgment of the care they provided.
