Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The mass spectrometric analysis for water-soluble and water-insoluble components extracted from atmospheric aerosol samples collected during COALA-2020 campaign in New South Wales, Australia, in 2020 (cut-off diameter: 0.95 micrometer) was in part performed under this research project by the use of an high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS). In this analysis, the solutions of water-soluble and water-insoluble components from the aerosol samples were nebulized using a home-made nebulizer with compressed cylinder air. The generated aerosols were passed through diffusion scrubbers to remove solvent vapors, which was followed by the exchange of the carrier gas to argon in gas exchange device. The sample aerosol particles in the argon flow were transferred to the HR-ToF-AMS for the analysis using electron ionization mass spectrometry. This mass spectrometric analysis, along with that was performed after the experiments under this project, is expected to contribute to the understanding of the contrasting roles of biomass burning organic aerosol and biogenic secondary organic aerosol: both of them are of biomass origin but they are from different emission pathways.
