Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I published an perspectives paper in Europhysics Letters. We review the theory of metal-free SERS, including electromagnetic enhancement and chemical enhancement, and introduce promising substrates developed recently, including MXenes, transition metal dichalcogenides, and carbon-based substrates. Moreover, we clarify challenges, provide potential solutions, and discuss unexploited applications. This perspective provides not only a broad and detailed view of metal-free SERS at the current stage, but also a roadmap for its future advancement. I submitted a paper to Advanced Optical Materials that is currently under review. In this paper we demonstrate a highly scalable, wearable SERS sensor based on an easy-to-fabricate, low-cost, ultrathin, flexible, stretchable, adhesive, and bio-integratable gold nanomesh. It can be fabricated in any shape and worn on virtually any surface for label-free, large-scale, in-situ sensing of diverse analytes from low to high concentrations. To show the practical utility of the wearable SERS sensor, we test the sensor for the detection of sweat biomarkers, drugs of abuse, and microplastics. This wearable SERS sensor represents a significant step toward the generalizability and practicality of wearable sensing technology. I presented my early results at the EUROPEAN RESEARCH DAYS - European Researchers in Japan: Achievements and Opportunities as an invited speaker and some more generic concepts at the Tokyo Metropolitan High School of Science and Technology under the JSPS Science Dialogue initiative to disseminate science.
