Outline of Final Research Achievements

The academic foresters, who became the leaders of _scientific forestry_ in modern Japan, introduced it to various parts of Imperial Japan. They occupied leading positions in forestry administration and forestry economy in Taiwan, Korea, Sakhalin, and even _Manchukuo_ and Southeast Asia. Although forestry in the colonies were initially largely developed individually, after the 1920s, the perspective of _imperial forestry_, which was intended to supply and conserve the forest resources of the Japanese empire as a whole, became clearer. It aimed to protect the forestry industry within the inner empire as well as to develop forestry in the Northeast and Southeast Asia. The perspective of scientific forestry was carried over to the former colonies after the Asia-Pacific War, but there were significant regional differences. In particular, the prewar experience of _imperial forestry_ was behind Japanese trading companies which intended to promote _tropical forestry_ in Southeast Asia.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
