Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study investigates public risk perception of COVID-19, a new risk to humanity, through an online survey. It also examines changes in risk perception concerning various phenomena previously studied. Compared to data from 2005 on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), another emerging coronavirus infection, a higher percentage of individuals now perceive COVID-19 as a danger to themselves and society. However, risk perception for some events has decreased compared to past data, prompting a detailed examination of these variations.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

COVID-19の流行により，市民は新興感染症やその対策に伴う多くのリスクについて考え，対応行動を行わざるを得なくなった。世界的な感染症リスクの経験が，もし市民の持つリスク観を変化させているとすれば，現在の社会におけるリスクベースの基準や規制などは，それによって変更を余儀なくされる可能性もある。本課題では，日本全体のリスク観が新興感染症流行下でどのように変動したかを過去のデータに照らして検討を行い，COVID-19流行下においてリスク認知に関する変化は認められるが，その影響は限定的であり，その特性を加えた影響を考慮することが必要であることを明らかにし，今後のリスク対策に資する知見を得た。
