Outline of Annual Research Achievements

生物は様々な方法で環境から情報を感受して生活している.なかでも音波を使った環境情報感受行動がエコーロケーションと呼ばれる行動である.照射した音波を物体に反射させることで物体までの距離や物体の形状,周囲の環境を把握する行動であり,脊椎動物においては鯨類や鳥類,コウモリ類などでみられる.なかでもコウモリ類はエコーロケーション能を高度に発達させたグループであり,完全な暗黒下でもこの能力によって周囲の空間や物体を精確に「みる」ことができることが知られる.現在,コウモリ類は地球上の哺乳類種の4分の1を占める多様なグループであるが,その繁栄はエコーロケーション能と飛行能力によって夜間の空という広大な空白ニッチに進出できたことと深く関わっていると考えられている.しかしコウモリ類におけるエコーロケーション能はどのタイミングで獲得されたのかは未だ確定されておらず,激しい論争が続いてきた.エコーロケーション進化に関する学説を提供してきたのは主に古生物学と分子進化学であったが,本研究課題はこの問題に対して胎児を用いた比較進化発生学的観点からアプローチすることを目指した.独立起源説を検証するためのより決定的な証拠を得ることを目的として本研究課題は比較解剖学にゲノミクスを組み合わせた比較進化発生学的アプローチをとり,キクガシラコウモリ類,ヤンゴコウモリ類,オオコウモリ類の三群間で超音波の発声器官の形態形成パターンの類似性と相違性,そして超音波の受信および発生器官の形態形成に関わる遺伝子発現プロファイルの類似性と相違性を明らかにした.

Reason

新型コロナウイルスの拡大によりコストの増大や実験実施の延期などは生じたものの計画事項は達成することができた.計画時点では発展的課題と捉えていた,日本産コウモリ種の全ゲノム決定とアノテーションが順調に進んだ.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

形態形質のどこでどれほどの遺伝子発現が起きているかを明らかにできる空間的トランスクリプトームを用いた解析により,コウモリの3大系統におけるエコーロケーション関連形質の発生プロセスの相違と共通性を明らかにする.
