Outline of Annual Research Achievements

RHICやLHCでの高エネルギー重イオン衝突実験により、クォークグルーオンプラズマ(QGP)が理想流体のように振る舞うことが分かったものの、その知見は相転移近傍に限られ、QGP物性の温度依存性、QGPの熱化機構、QGPの初期条件、カイラル対称性の回復現象など、多くのことが、依然として分かっていない。本研究は、相転移から離れた高温領域の物性に迫る新たな探針「重クォークと電子対」に着目し、その高精度測定を行うものである。
これらの高精度測定を可能にするのがALICE実験の高度化である。我々は、2012年からガス電子増幅器(GEM)を用いたTPC検出器の高度化を推進してきた。GEMを使うことでイオンがドリフト領域に漏れるのを最小限に抑え、トリガーなしで連続的にデータを収集する。TPC検出器からの生データ量が3TB/sにもなるため、初段のFPGAでデータを処理することが必要となる。2021年度、大山は、FPGAでのデータ処理に必要な、コモン・ノイズ処理フィルタ、ペデスタル除去フィルタ等の実装を完了した。郡司と関畑は、50kHzの鉛+鉛衝突において微量のイオンの漏れ出しが作る空間電荷によって、再構成される飛跡が歪む効果をモンテカルロ計算で見積もり、機械学習を用いることで、多くの領域で歪みが補正可能なことを示した。郡司は、2018年からALICE実験のランコーディネーターを務め、2021年の目標は、ALICE実験の高度化を完成することであった。夏頃から、全ての検出器とデータ収集系を統合した試運転を開始した。ALICE実験の新しいデータ収集系は、リアルタイムにデータを処理し、飛跡を再構成する。リアルタイム処理を、エキスパートの協働により、無事に統合し、2021年10月末に、陽子+陽子衝突のパイロットランを行い、各検出器と新しいデータ収集系が大きな問題もなく動作することを確認した。

Reason

新型コロナウィルスにより、LHCの改修期間が2021年まで延長された。最初の物理データ取得の開始が1年ほど遅れることになったが、その分、ALICE実験高度化をより確実に完成することが可能となった。2021年度には、TPC検出器からのデータ処理(コモン・ノイズ処理フィルタ、ペデスタル除去フィルタ等)をFPGAに実装し、宇宙線ランなどを通じて動作を確認することができた。実際の衝突で重要となる空間電荷による飛跡の歪みに関しても、実際のTPC検出器の性能を加味したモンテカルロ計算に基づく評価が可能となり、新たに機械学習による補正機構を導入し、一部を除いて、多くの領域で十分補正が可能なことを実証するなど、多くの目標を達成することができた。また、郡司はランコーディネーターとして、現地に長期で滞在しながら、現地やリモートのエキスパートと協働を通じて、全ての測定器を新しいデータ収集系に統合し、陽子+陽子衝突のパイロットランを通じて、検出器はデータ収集性の順調な稼働を確認し、ALICE実験の高度化を完了することができた。2022年からの物理実験を前にして、順調な進展を達成したと言える。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

次年度、2022年から物理実験が始まる。LHCの最高エネルギーでの陽子+陽子衝突が開始され、年末には鉛+鉛衝突が予定されている。次年度の研究推進方策を以下のように定める。(1) 連続読み出しTPC検出器のデータ品質の管理。2022年からの高品質データ収集に向けて、FPGAに実装したアルゴリズムの評価を進める。(2)機械学習を用いたTPCの空間電荷補正機構の完成。機械学習を用いた空間電荷補正は、多くの部分で要求を満たしているが、さらなる性能の改善にむけて、ビーム輝度の細かい時間構造を入力に加えるなど、様々な改善を試みる。また、Random Forest, XG boost, Neural Networkなど、様々なアルゴリズムも検討する。さらに、実際のデータを使っての評価を進め、空間電荷補正機構を完成させる。(3)解析フレームワークの構築を進める。2021年は主にモンテカルロを使って解析のフレームワークを整備してきたが、2022年は、実際のデータを使って、解析フレームワークを最適化し、電子や重クォーク同定などのデータ解析を進める。データのキャリブレーションを進め、ALICE高度化前よりも優れた性能が達成されていることを実証する。
