Outline of Annual Research Achievements

トッテン氷河底面融解量と外洋からの熱供給との比較

沖合からトッテン氷河へと至る暖水の循環像を明らかにするため、豪州による観測を含む複数回の現場観測データと数値シミュレーションの結果を融合し解析した。その結果、大陸棚上へと流入した暖水が大陸棚上の深いお椀状の地形に沿って時計回りに循環し、その一部が氷河前面の局所的な深い海底峡谷（幅約10～20km、水深1000m以上）に沿って最終的にトッテン氷河の下へと流れ込んでいることが示された（沖合には複数の巨大な時計回りの定在海洋渦が存在し、暖水は渦の東側を中心に効率的に大陸棚方向へと輸送され、その後、お椀状の深い地形に沿って時計回りに循環し、一部が最終的にトッテン氷河へ運ばれる）。これにより、暖水流入を伴うトッテン氷河域の顕著な氷床の底面融解ー氷床海洋相互作用ーの実態が明らかになった。さらに、トッテン氷河の下へと流入する暖水の温度は一定ではなく、氷床融解を引き起こす海洋からの熱供給には大きな経年的な変動があることも明らかになった。この結果は、トッテン氷河周辺の氷床質量損失の包括的理解のみならず、温暖化が進行する現在から近未来における海面水位予測の精度向上にも資すると期待される。また、他の東南極沿岸域においても、同様の解析をする事により、さらなる精度向上を見込む事が期待される。

このように、交付申請書に記載した「研究の目的」及び「研究実施計画」について、上記のように直接的に研究目的に対して成果を上げる事となった。

今後は、前述の【トッテン氷河底面融解量と外洋からの熱供給との比較】と同様のデータ解析を、最新の観測データを用いて複数年にわたって継続実施し、複数年の知見を蓄積する。
