Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Pigments used in hand-colored photographs made in the early Meiji period, Japan were investigated, and the uses of carmine, eosin, and methyl violet were confirmed. These pigments were also used in Nishiki-e (multi-colored woodblock-prints) and polychrome sculptures made in the same period. The method of using pigments in Nishiki-e involved mixing more than two kinds or overprinting for obtaining more colorful expressions, while hand-colored photographs and polychrome sculptures typically used one type of pigment or paint for each color. Since the production methods remained unchanged, pigments that were compatible with these methods were selected and used.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
