Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examined the reception of German films in wartime Japan from multiple perspectives. The main findings are as follows. First, based on articles in the Manchurian Film Association's publicity magazine Manchurian Film, this study examined the expectations for German films in the early stages of Manchurian cinema and how those expectations developed over time. Second, I examined the contemporary reception of Nazi films in the United States, a major film-producing nation that would eventually go to war with Germany, and in Switzerland, a neutral country with a significant German-speaking population. By comparing these cases, I clarified the unique characteristics of the situation in Japan.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

戦時日本の「映画国策」にはナチスの映画統制を想起させるものが多い。また、真珠湾攻撃以降、アメリカ映画の輸入が途絶え、ドイツ映画（＝ナチ映画）は日本で見られた数少ない洋画の中心であった。ところが、ナチ映画が同時代の日本でどのように受容され、また、日本映画にどのような影響を与えたか、という問題については、ナチスとのかかわりを語ることが戦後においてタブーだったこともあり、これまで十分には論じられてこなかった。本研究は、ナチ映画の同時代の受容の他国との比較、および、占領地・満洲での映画政策におけるドイツ映画の位置づけ、といった観点から、日独映画交流史におけるこうした空隙の一部を埋めようとした。
