Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During the third and final year of this project, I conducted the final stage of research into early modern Nagoya booksellers and their counterparts in Edo. My archival work included refining a working spreadsheet of bibliographic data for all extant books published in Nagoya during the period under study, with some comparative data for Edo editions. With this final bit of material, I was able to complete an excel sheet that can form the basis of a searchable database in the future, which was one of the project goals. Short term, I have moved away from an initial focus on more technical aspects of book production, and given more attention to the actants in the production process. In this final stage of the project, I have looked closely at the roles that individual authors played in book design, calligraphy and illustration. In connection with the project, I recently published a peer-reviewed book chapter on the work of Shikitei Sanba (1776-1822), focusing on aspects of book design and the crafting of vernacular language that reflected the urban culture of the time (Routledge 2024). I am also working on a comparative study of book design in Jippensha Ikku's work and those of local authors in Nagoya who emulated him.
