Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examined short utterances fitting within a single line of Ariosto's “Orlando Furioso”, organizing their total count and their distribution within stanzas and lines and compared them with data from Tasso's “Gerusalemme liberata" and Boiardo's “Inamoramento de Orlando”. The results revealed that Ariosto places a large number of direct speeches within one line in the center and in the first half of the stanza. The short lines, which often directly express the speaker's emotions, are placed by Boiardo and Tasso in the most highlighted eighth line - at the end of the stanza - to maximize their effect. In contrast, in “Orlando furioso,” I found that the short lines are placed in the first half or the center of the stanza to depict the characters' emotions in a restrained manner.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ルネサンス期イタリアの英雄詩の直接話法の配置と効果を検証した論考は、これまで存在しなかった。台詞の連内の配置と効果を部分的に取り上げた論考は存在するが、本研究のように15、16世紀を代表するボイアルド、アリオスト、タッソの英雄詩の直接話法を網羅的に整理し、そのデータに基づいて作品の特徴を分析した研究は、恐らく前例のないものと思われる。本研究では、特にアリオストの『狂えるオルランド』の台詞の配置を考察することで、いままでにない観点からこの英雄詩の特徴の一端を明らかにすることに貢献した。本作品がルネサンスのイタリア詩の最高傑作とみなされているだけに、この研究成果の意義は大きいと言える。
