Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The basic research aims and planned outputs of the original grant application have remained unchanged since it was initially approved: (i) to make progress in understanding Vietnamese linguistics, through cooperation and workshop interactions; (ii), to publish original research in Vietnamese grammar, as well as applied research involving Vietnamese L1/L2 learners. In 2023/4-2024/3 I gave four presentations on theoretical/applied aspects of Vietnamese at international venues (Thailand, UK, Vietnam, Taiwan), including two invited plenary talks: International Conference on Systemic Functional Linguistics (Hanoi, December 2023), International Scholars of Vietnamese Linguistics (Hsinchu, Taiwan, March 2024). I also co-edited a special Proceedings issue of Taiwan Journal of Linguistics (ISVL-3), which was in press by 2024/3. A research article based on the Hanoi presentation was submitted, and in currently in press.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
As was noted in last year's report, the Covid-19 emergency significantly delayed progress on this grant (where the bulk of funding was dedicated to facilitation of joint research through field trips and inviting collaborators to Japan): The Covid situation set back targets and spending by approximately one year. In addition to this, the research that I have done over the past year has led me to significant revisions to the proposed manuscript, with respect to some of the analyses. In conjunction with my main collaborator, Dr. Trang Phan (University of Venice), I have now revised the book proposal: the revised proposal, which has been submitted to Cambridge University Press, now anticipates completion of final draft by March 2025 (~ 5 months after the most recent anticipated date).
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
As noted above, on the basis of work carried out this year in preparation for conferences, I took the decision to revise the book proposal, and to submit this revised proposal to a new publisher (Cambridge University Press): this was done earlier this month (May 2024). If the proposal is accepted I hope to complete the new draft by the end of the grant period (March 2025). By that time, I will also have delivered two co-edited special issues (Taiwan Journal of Linguistics 2024, and Languages, 2025). I will also resubmit a proposal for a further grant, in order to continue this line of research in 2025-2028.
|
Causes of Carryover |
As noted previously, my research trips were delayed by approximately one year dues to Covid-19; as a consequence, my expenditure is one year behind schedule. This year, I will use up in the remaining funding on research trips, conference presentations, and related travel expenses.
