Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aims to show the phenomena which apparently see deviant but actually acceptable. From the view point of syntax and lexicon studies, In doing so, I have published a book in which I observe several differences between American English and British English, as well as pointing out that some descriptions in several dictionaries are out of date.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

英語の語法に見られるネイティブ・スピーカーの判断に揺れや変化が見られる現象（具体的には 'be likely to' の「人の性向や傾向を表す」用法でのアメリカ英語とイギリス英語の違い、assign と ascribe/attribute のカバーする範囲の違いに関して辞書間で見られる違い、disdainや scorn が動詞としての機能をなくしている事実、さらには辞書等でしばしば取り上げられている meticulous のアメリカ英語とイギリス英語における違いが現代のネイティブ・スピーカーの間では失われていること等）を指摘した。これらの成果は今後の辞書や文法書のアップデートに必須となる。
