Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the project's second year, data collected during the initial pilot phase of the study were analyzed, and the research instruments were revised. Primary data collection was completed with a total of 438 participants who engaged in Maker Education activities then completed reflections about their experiences. The reflections were parsed and coded using qualitative analysis software for evidence and alignment with core maker education constructs. An article was written detailing the results of this phase of the research that was published internally. Additional reports have been submitted to international peer-reviewed journals detailing the effect of the intervention on the development of soft skills. Furthermore, analysis of the lexical and syntactical characteristics of the collected samples were analyzed using NLP tools. The research design and initial results were presented overseas at CALICO 2022 in the United States and domestically at both the 2022 JALT and JASAL conferences.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Research progressed relatively smoothly, and the researchers were able to collect the needed amount of data. Though some instances of data collection did not pan out, there was sufficient redundancy to ensure the necessary amount of data were collected. The complete data set from over 400 participants has now been collated and analysis has begun.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Analysis of the data will continue, specifically focusing on analyzing the output of the natural language processing tools (NLP) and performing statistical analysis. Work will continue on writing up the results and publishing them in peer-reviewed journals. The results will be presented at JALT CALL 2023 and the IAFOR International Conference on Education.
|
Causes of Carryover |
One opportunity for data collection fell through, leaving some additional funding that would have been used to purchase materials for the intervention. These funds will be used to allow this data to be collected this year.
