Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Data collection is in progress. Desk research was completed in AY2021. Two sections were published in Sustainability and Frontiers in Psychology. In 11/2021, our team collaborated with scholars from Oxford EMI, CUHK and TGU and published a large study “Challenges to Internationalisation of University Programmes: A Systematic Thematic Synthesis of Qualitative Research on Learner-Centred English Medium Instruction (EMI) Pedagogy” in Sustainability journal (Impact factor 3.25). We studied over 1760 participants in 20 non-Anglophone countries and jurisdictions. The results were also presented at the ICERI2021. Also, in 01/2022 our team hosted a guest lecture by the director of Oxford EMI Julie Dearden entitled “Internationalising Higher Education and English Medium Instruction (EMI).”

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In AY 2022 we plan to work on data collection and analysis. A couple of teacher workshops will be held. Two new articles are planned for publication in 2022. Specifically, the principal investigator is currently working on a longitudinal case study exploring EMI teachers' interactional competencies. Another work is also underway which is aimed at exploring the impact of students' language proficiency on their perceptions of EMI teacher competencies. The findings of the research of this stage are planned to be presented at the International conference - EDULEARN2022 (WOS-indexed Proceedings). Also, the PI will take part in the CAMCA-2022 Forum in Washington DC (June 2022) to establish collaboration with researchers and practitioners from American and Eurasian universities.

Causes of Carryover |
Plan for 2022: Since international travel remains relatively limited, we will use our budget to organize several online international workshops for Japanese faculty. We will invite experienced scholars from UK, Spain and USA. Depending on the pandemic situation, 2-3 essential intl. trips are also planned. We also plan to publish 1-3 papers in open access journals. In addition, we will work on developing the Asia-Pacific Forum for Internationalization of Education and create its website. Books and online resources are planned to be purchased.
Note: The leftover amount of JPY25 was unused in the previous fiscal year 2021. We would like to use this amount in FY2022 to supplement our main budget.
