Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
An examination of extant phrasal lists was conducted, in terms of approaches and final products, examining what a 'good' phrase bank might entail. The results were presented (JALT, 2021) and written up (under review). The approach to identifying candidate phrasal items outlined in the application was clarified and subsequently implemented, resulting in lists of candidate n-grams, phrase-frames and collocations. Candidate items will be rated by experienced EAP instructors, prior to being organized and presented as a phrasebank. We plan to present the phrasebank development process this coming year. The corpus of student assignments used in the initial development of the phrasebank, and as a means of gauging the effectiveness of the phrasebank in Years 2 and 3 of the project, was expanded.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project is generally progressing as planned. The process of identification of candidate items for inclusion in the phrasebank took a little longer than anticipated, meaning the instructor ratings of items has been carried forward to Year 2.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
A research paper examining a selection of phrasal lists is currently under review. A proposal for a presentation outlining the initial development process of the phrasebank has been submitted for JALT 2022. Publication of a paper outlining the initial development process of the phrasebank is planned.

Causes of Carryover |
Due to COVID, the JALT conference was held online. We were therefore unable to spend money budgeted for travel to conference. Additionally, money allocated to instructor ratings of phrasal items has been carried forward as this will now be carried out in Year 2.
