Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This is a longitudinal study exploring students' attitudes to speaking in English (L2) and their additional language (L3) before, during and after their study abroad. During the first part of this study, we collected data from students in Taiwan. Based on this initial study, we published a book chapter and presented the results at the JALT Conference. For the main study, we tried to recruit students going to Germany, France, Korea, Taiwan and Kyrgyz. Unfortunately, we could not recruit participants for Korea, Taiwan and Kyrgyz. Instead, we focus on three students going to Germany and two students going to France. The five participants completed an initial survey about their language learning experience and motivation. We then gave them a follow-up interview. The participants agreed to submit monthly journals about their L2 and L3 language use and to be interviewed this summer.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We planned to collect data from students going to five destinations (Germany, France, Korea, Taiwan and Kyrgyz). Unfortunately, we could not recruit students destined for Korea and Taiwan. The Kyrgyz SA programme is suspended due to health concerns (Covid-19). We will collect data from participants in Germany and France. Hopefully, we can collect data from other destinations in 2023.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In this 2022 academic year, we plan to transcribe and analyse the first interviews. We will analyse journal submissions from the students during their SA about their L2 and L3 speaking experiences. Based on the initial interviews and the journal data, we will interview students during their SA. We will submit one journal article and present at the JALT Pan-SIG conference.

Causes of Carryover |
Due to Covid-19, I could not attend face-face conferences or travel to visit my co-researchers in 2021. This year (2022 academic year), I plan to visit the students to collect data in Europe. I also plan to attend conferences and meet my co-researchers in the UK.
