Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This is a longitudinal study exploring students' attitudes to speaking in English (L2) and their additional language (L3) before, during and after their study abroad. We recruited five participants who studied L2 English and their L3 (French/German). Two participants studied abroad in Lille (France) and the other three were in Mainz (Germany).
We collected data from the participants using monthly speaking journals, retrospective timeline graphs and mid-SA interviews. We also transcribed and analysed data from pre-SA interviews and questionnaires.
The principal investigator interviewed the participants in Mainz and Lille and discussed the results and future directions with Dr King at Leicester University in the UK.
We presented at two conferences and published in "System" journal.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

The beginning of the study was delayed due to COVID-19 but we collected some data from students in Germany and France.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In this 2023 academic year, we plan to transcribe the second interviews and analyse them with the journal feedback. We will then conduct post-SA interviews.
We will submit one journal article and present at EuroSLA (UK). We also plan to attend BAAL (UK) and JALT (in Japan).

Causes of Carryover

Due to COVID-19, less money was used in the first year of the study. This year, I will use the travel funds for conferences in the UK.
