Outline of Final Research Achievements

The Italian memory and historical consciousness of Fascism and World War Ⅱ is Dictatorship of Mussolini, passive participation subordinate to Hitler, disastrous defeat in Africa, Balkan States and Russia, German occupation after surrender, Resistance and Liberation.
This thesis (Italy=victim and victor) is criticized from various directions. I analyzed the history of Italian nationalism, Mussolini's imperialism and his fantasy of Empire, Italian occupation in Yugoslavia. I cleared that Italian occupation was the decisive factor of civil war and ethnic cleansing in Yugoslavia. Then I showed that World War Ⅱ in Europe had the aspect of civil war.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究成果の学術的意義は、①イタリアの第二次大戦への参戦が受動的な参戦ではなく、ムッソリーニの「帝国」建設の野望のための主体的な選択であったことの明確化。②日本で初めてのイタリアのユーゴ占領の実態とその意義の分析。③ユーゴ占領統治のための民族対立を利用した武装組織の創設が内戦の原因となり、それが「ヨーロッパの内戦」の性格を体現したことの分析。社会的意義は、①第二次大戦をヨーロッパに関しては「ヨーロッパの内戦」と見る視点の有効性の確認。②「ファシズム対民主主義」という第二次大戦間観を脱して複眼的に見る有効性を提示。③イタリアにおけるファシズムと第二次大戦の「記憶と歴史認識」と政治の関係の解明。
