Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The first year was devoted to 1) an in-depth literature review on the model constructs (Goal Maximization, Grit, and Individual Entrepreneurial Orientation (IEO)) and modelling techniques and 2) a preliminary in-house pilot study with university students.
The literature review extended to Bandura's Self-Efficacy, Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behaviour, (Deci and Ryan's) Self-Determination Theory, rational choice and decision-making literature and modelling technique on a moderated moderator effect.
For the pilot study which posited job hunting as a life-making project of university students, two kinds of online surveys were undertaken with graduating students to obtain sample data on the key model constructs above for a preliminary analysis. The first survey, consisting of many open-ended questions, targeted 15 graduating students who managed to secure job offers from well-recognised organisations whereas the second survey, built on a cluster sampling, generated 86 usable responses from graduating students. Both surveys included the Japanese version of Grit-S (Nishikawa et al. 2015), 9 of the back-translated Bolton & Lane’s (2012) IEO items, and sample goal maximisation scale items.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to an unforeseen family problem, the pilot study consisting of two online sruvey was not well executed as desired. That is, not enough a sample size for construct validation (convergent, discriminat, and nomological validty) of key model constructs. Prior to the planned online pilot study with a general sample in 2022 which will be funded by the JSPS, the psychometric property of the model constructs needs to be investigated further with a larger sample. For the purpose, another round of data collection from university students is planned in July, 2022.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The literature review and preliminary data collection and analyses will continue into 2022. As mentioned in the Current Status section, another in-house pilot study with university students will be undertaken in July, before the planned 2022 data collection from a broader public, for the investigation of construct validity of the key model constructs as well as a context specificity/sensitivity of Grit and IEO scales which was explored in the 2021 online in-depth survey. Following statistical analyses of the in-house survey data, online survey instruments for a general public will be developed and put to the test in October, 2022. Some research papers will be produced based on the on-going literature review and statistical analyses of obtained data in 2021 and 2022.

Causes of Carryover |
There was a substantial discrepancy between the quoted price and the actual price paid eight months later for the budgetted high-performing lap-top. The financial gain from the discrepancy was well expended on the purchase of additional books for the project. Nonetheless, there still remained a small discrepancy which has no significant financial contribution to the 2022 operations.
