Outline of Final Research Achievements

A joint research team by Takehiro Usui, Mitsuko Chikasada and Edwin Aloiau from the Faculty of Economics at Soka University statistically examined the characteristics of those who failed to complete elementary school in Japan, using the 2000 and 2010 census. They found that their characteristics could be explained in three multilayered structures: 1) by current poverty, 2) by differences in nationality, and 3) by environmental factors such as geographical isolation and the Battle of Okinawa in World War II.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、国勢調査が義務教育を排除されている人びとの現状を把握するために有効であることを示しました。この結果は日本の学齢超過者（義務教育を受けることのできなかった人びとで学齢期を超過した15歳以上の人びと）の人びとに対する、全ての人びとが通うことのできる夜間中学を設置するよう、働きかけることが必要であることを示しています。また戦争に関連した要因により、初等教育を修了していない人びとは、おそらく他の国にも存在するため、国勢調査データを用いた包括的な調査を行うことを推奨します。
