Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year was remarkably efficient for the accumulation of numerous advanced radiographic experimental data. We performed 4 successful runs at HEDP platform of SACLA XFEL (BL3, EH5) in the frame of 4 user's proposals. The ultra-high spatial resolution (< 1 micron), large field of view (>2 mm) free-space propagation phase-contrast imaging (PCI) scheme based on LiF crystal detector was upgraded with a novel ceramic-scintillator CCD camera built at SACLA (Kameshima et al.,Opt.Lett.,2019). That allowed the online control of current experimental conditions and drastically improve the capability of the PCI radiographic scheme: a new conjugate imaging principle was applied for simultaneous recording of PCI images at two coaxial positions of detectors. That option increases the reliability of the retrieval algorithms for determination of morphology and snap-shot density map of the object. About 200 pump-probe shots were carried out to observe 2D dynamics of Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities up to the turbulent phase mimicking conditions of astrophysical and ICF cases. For that targets with flat and sinusoidal interface and Atwood number of 0.5 - 0.97 were examed. The evolution of the elastic-plastic wave structure in mono- and nanopolycrystalline diamond and behavior of slip-plane dislocations were studied on the dependence of the stress loading vector. Impact and stress-induced spallation, ablation, and plasma flows in metals (Al, Cu) have been visualized. Data have been obtained to ensure the PCI optimal conditions depending on the type of object and XFEL photon energy.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
During the first year of work, all plans were realized, moreover, due to approval at SACLA XFEL more beam time than expected, for the experimental part of the project we are working ahead of plan. Significant achievement on the enhancement of our PCI radiography method is connected with implementation of new on-line controlled conjugate imaging technique based on using coaxially located two detectors. The spatial resolution 0.4 - 0.8 micron in the field of view of full aperture XFEL beam allowed to reach conditions that the vast majority of obtained radiographic images carry detailed information never before observed in experiments or simulations. For example, the evolution of the coupled elastic-plastic wave structure in diamond was directly observed until the phase of plastic wave dissipation. That allowed us for the first time to adjust and validate a diamond strength model in the range of several Mbar by performing continuum mechanics simulations (SPH code). The article summarizing this result is under submission to Nature. Published 2 articles , Accepted 1 article. Conferences 7 presentations ( 1 invited , 4 oral, 1 poster ) We believe that this year we created a strong experimental and theoretical base for successful continuation of our research and for reaching the final goals of the project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
2022: We will continue analysis and matching verification of obtained experimental data. In the experiment, we will provide further the PCI radiography study of the role of slip plane deformations in shock compressed diamond, the formation and evolution of elastic-plastic shock waves in solids associated with the problem ICF, and the interaction of supersonic flows with obstacles related to various astrophysical tasks, including problem of stars formation and Karman street vortex dynamics. Two experimental runs will be performed at SACLA XFEL. In theory, we are aiming to develop a diffraction-based method for the evaluation of density gradients in shock fronts and to apply the Beer-Lambert law and the forward Abel transform method for the quantitative reconstruction of density from radiographic images. Two articles will be prepared for publication.
