Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study created a database on the urban development of ports of call for Kitamae ships, and clarified how the geographical location characteristics and the economic performance of the ports of call were linked to the urban development of port towns in the modern era and beyond. In addition, it was possible to organize and understand the subsequent transformation of industrial structure and port development. Through this research, it was found that social improvement movements, such as lobbying the government by local leaders who were considered to be prominent figures in each region, had a major impact on the subsequent formation of cities. After the decline of the Kitamae ships port, the geopolitical concept of "Ura-Nihon" (Backside of Japan) took hold, and we were able to clarify the possibility that this may have had a major impact on the formation of the city, including in attracting public works projects.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
