Outline of Final Research Achievements

In terms of traffic regulations, pedestrians (including cyclists and other light vehicles) are often not practically prioritized on the road. Studies reveal that drivers are less likely to yield when there are other vehicles present. Experiments also demonstrate that cars tend to accelerate prematurely at signalized crosswalks, indicating a lack of awareness of pedestrian right-of-way. Pedestrians frequently avoid using crosswalks even when ample distance is available and tend to be cautious of vehicles by checking for them before crossing. Cyclists riding on the left side of the road are observed to filter through traffic if there is more than 1.2 times the vehicle's width in clearance. However, the effectiveness of checking for safety when avoiding parked vehicles varies depending on cyclists' experience levels.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は，道路交通における歩行者と自転車の実際の優先度と，混合交通におけるドライバーの運転行動にかかる現状を科学的に示した．法的な規定と実際の交通現場での乖離が明らかにされ，特に他の車両が存在するとドライバーの優先行動が低下する傾向や，自動車は信号機付き横断歩道でも早期発進の傾向が示された．これに対して優先されるべき歩行者が横断時に自動車を警戒していることと，道路左側を走行する自転車の挙動特性が明示されたことで，ドライバーの交通安全教育や行動変容の促進に向けた知見として，より安全な交通環境の構築に寄与することが期待される．
