Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
As the Pacific and Indian Oceans are the main target areas of the research project, extensive algal sample collections and field surveys for seawater quality were carried out at the coasts of Japan (Kanagawa, Chiba, Okinawa I., Ishigaki I., Iriomote I., Taketomi I., Kagoshima, Tanegashima), Indonesia, Singapore, and Myanmar. The collected algal samples and environmental data are now under analysis. According to the current data, species found in Japan are appeared to be confined only to Japan, which are different from the species distributed in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific transition zone. A research paper describing two new species of brown algal genus Dictyota from Myanmar and Japan has been submitted to the international journal "Phycologia" and it is now under review.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Field surveys and sample collections were accomplished at many places of Japan (covering the Tokyo coastal area to the Okinawa islands), Myanmar (three coastal areas from north to south of the whole coastline), Indonesia (Bintan I.), and Singapore (north and south coast) as a proposed plan. Molecular analyses (e.g., DNA extraction, sequencing, etc.) of the collected samples are now under processing and so far all the analyses are going smoothly. In addition, the morphological examination of algal samples is also in progress. A research paper proposing two new species of Dictyota has been submitted to the International Journal "Phycologia" and another paper is also now under preparation.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
-Field surveys and sample collections in Japan (Okinawa Is., Miyakojima Is., Amami-Oshima I., Tanegashima, Kagoshima, Kanagawa, Chiba coastal areas), Indonesia (Manado) and Myanmar (along the Rakhine, Ayeyarwady, and Tanintharyi coasts) -Molecular analyses of the collected samples using multigene markers -Data analyses using various phylogenetic methods and software -Data analyses using environmental, oceanographic, and ecological data -Morphological examination -Preparation for presentations and research papers to be published at the International Conferences and journals
|
Causes of Carryover |
A field survey and sampling trip is planned two times in Myanmar this year. However, the remaining amount is not enough for another field trip to Myanmar for this year. Therefore, it will be used together with the next year's research grant for two sample collection trips to Myanmar next year.
