| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Field surveys and extensive algal sample collections were performed on Miyakojima and Amami-oshima islands. Molecular phylogenetic analyses have revealed the occurrence of several unknown Padina species which are considered to be new species in southern Japan and Myanmar. This discovery contributes to an increase in species number more, particularly in the Pacific Ocean.
A taxonomic reassessment of Dictyota species from Japan was carried out based on a combination of morphology and molecular analyses. The results have shown a higher species richness in Japan than previously reported, with nearly double the number of species previously reported.
A part of this study describing two new species of Dictyota from Japan and Myanmar-Malaysia is currently in press in the international journal "Phycologia".

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Field surveys and sample collections were completed in various places on Miyakojima and Amami-Oshima islands as per the proposed plan. Molecular analyses and morphological examinations of the collected samples are also progressing well. Data analyses of the environmental data are currently being processed.
A part of the results of this study is currently in press in an international academic journal.
Additionally, some results were also presented as an invited talk at an international conference.
Currently, three more research manuscripts are being prepared and will be submitted to international journals very soon.

| Causes of Carryover |
A field survey and sampling trip in the coastal areas of Myanmar could not be conducted this year due to the safety conditions being impacted by the civil wars happening nationwide in Myanmar. As a result, a substitute sampling trip will be performed in Myanmar next year, and the research grant will be utilized for this trip.
