Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We have received the approval of the protocol by the institutional review board. For this study, we recruited 100 eligible elderly volunteers (aged between 75 to 83 years), and received their written informed consent. They have been assigned to one of the following three groups: 1) Exercise Intervention Group (40 people); 2) Yogurt Ingestion Group (20 people); and 3) Control group (40 people). The intervention period has begun after the completion of the collection of baseline data. Baseline data on demographic and clinical variables, and cognitive function and balance tests have been collected. Also, baseline blood samples and stool samples have been collected. We have also conducted the relevant measurements and data collection at the end of 6 months of intervention (or no intervention).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Three groups are continuing to undergo the intervention (or no intervention) as follows: Intervention Group I: who are gathering at the designated place once a week for exercise (a combination of strength, balance, and endurance training) and nutrition guidance, and also cognitive function training; 2) Intervention Group II: who are ingesting 100 g of yogurt daily, containing arginine in combination with bifidobacterial LKM512; and 3) control group: who are maintaining their usual lifestyle including dietary and exercise habits. Three groups will need to undergo the intervention (or no intervention) for a period of 18 months. We are also conduction the preliminary analysis of the data collected at baseline and at the end of 6 months of intervention (or no intervention).
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Three groups will need to undergo 18 months of continuous intervention (or no intervention). We will continue collecting the relevant data at the end of 12 months, and lastly, at the end of the intervention period. Collected data will be analyzed for possible changes in the measured variables from baseline to 6th, 12th, and 18th months of intervention as applicable, and statistically compared within and between the groups. The final report will be prepared including what is going to be achieved during the research project and what should be done in future in light of our findings. Also, the findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals.

Causes of Carryover |
The collected blood samples have been stored as appropriate, and are going to be outsourced for the relevant analyses. Therefore, for those analyses, the relevant payments will be required at a later date.
