Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research has been highlighted in the Nikkei. My interview has been published in the newspaper highlighting the PMFC. My interview has also telecast in the FM Kirara radio. Bioelectricity generation from big tree microbial fuel cell has been studied for this current research. There was 2 big Challenges during this research:1. How to place/set up the plant microbial fuel cell in a grown up tree? As the root systems of a big tree has already grown up, it is impossible to set the anode under the root system of a tree.2. How to increase the amount of generation of voltage and power from a big tree? The last year's research, we used two different types of big tree named Kurogane and Mukonoki for the research. It has chosen because the Kurogane is an ever green tree and Mukonoki is deciduous tree. The evergreen plant can generate more electricity throughout the year. However, the deciduous trees can generate less electricity due to its fallen leaves and change of color during the winter or the autumn time. For the first challenge, we set up bio-battery surrounding the tree. The biobattery were connected with the series connection. The food for the bacteria will be received by the help of the root extrudates. It was found that the bioelectricity can be generated from the big tree. The amount of the maximum voltage generation is 100000mV from one tree of Kurogane. However, it was seen that the for the Mukonoki, the voltage generation slightly dropped from the autumn and from the winter when the color of the trees started to change and the fallen down.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research is progressing smoothly rather than initially thought. The reason of this is that, my laboratory members were working hard including me in the field and the laboratory together. There was enough funds for the experiment from the JSPS. Thank you so much.
Another reason is that, this research discussion has been conducted with Professor Kenichi Soga of University of California Berkeley, USA in every two/tree weeks. This collaboration works help me to move forward quickly.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For the future:
1. Self-made electrode materials will be developed and will be used in the PMFC research. 2. The agricultural waste will be used for the making electrode materials and will be used for the bioelectricity generation. 3. New design will be developed to generate the more voltage and electricity from the from a single cell/biobattery. 4. To increase the power from a Big tree microbial fuel cell.

Causes of Carryover |
The reason for remaining the excess amount is due to the unable to join the international conference in the USA due to the COVID 19. Another reason is that the field experiment was not able to repeat due to the lack of proper plants. The next year, we will select the plant which is not only ever green but also which can generate electricity even after the fruit is grown. This 2023, we will also tried to make the biobattery from the agricultural waste. Then the biobattery will be used for the bioelectricity generation from the big fruit tree.
