Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the 2022 financial year the project was gradually advanced, with some initial useful outcomes. Three research meetings were held domestically in Kyushu and Kyoto. The evaluation of some of the end uses of minerals in transportation, from the perspective of environmental and resource impacts were undertaken. This work considered the shift from petrol to electric vehicles in Australia, considering the shift of environmental burdens from urban to rural communities. The base data will be used in the next phase of the deliberation in the project. The focus of Just Transition was clarified for the project, as the importance of social equity in energy and resource transitions is still lacking - particularly for critical mineral producing communities that are indirectly impacted by the energy transition. Australia has been identified as one important case study and data sources are available for the research there. The project also leveraged synergies with another to evaluate public understanding of Just Transitions and the priority for hydrogen economy options. These initial results were reported in 3 international conference papers and 3 invited lectures at different international conferences. Some baseline surveys were undertaken that will help build the final interaction platform.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
During the first half of the financial year, the COVID-19 situation was still prevalent, so the lack of face-to-face activities slowed the progress. From the second half of the year student interaction and conference activities have improved the opportunity to progress the project. So we were able to hold some direct meetings in Kyoto and Kyushu.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the upcoming year we will progress the LCA of deep sea and alternative resources will be pursued, as well as the development of the online platform. It is expected that from the second half of the year an RA will be employed for this purpose. It is planned that the LCA data and initial survey format should be available by the end of the year.
|
Causes of Carryover |
In the next financial year a TA will be hired to help undertake the LCA and web tool construction. The previous year was heavily disrupted with COVID and its follow-on. As the COVID pandemic has subsided, it will be possible to advance this with in-person guidance more readily than previously. Turning the basic data that has previously been obtained into a useful interactive material will be the critical part of this year and the main use of the funding. There will be further expenses for LCA data and also for obtaining the images and video footage required for the interactive tool to be prepared.
|
Remarks |
The Just Transitions project has synergies with the current Kakenhi, focusing on the social equity and priority for energy and resource transitions.
