Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We have been gathering background data for the next phase of the project. The data on environmental and social impacts associated with new energy and resource projects and technologies are being calculated by lifecycle assessment. We aim to identify environmental impacts and who will be impacted specifically by changes to the energy system. We have discussed with collaborators in resource producing countries, and countries needing to rapidly change to clean energy and expand the energy provision to identify the best strategy for further participation studies. We have undertaken some preparatory surveys which can be used as a baseline for further understanding. One international conference paper on electric vehicles and just transitions was presented as a part of this project`s progress.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The progress in calculating the environmental impacts has been going relatively smoothly. There have been some delays in undertaking the participatory component, but we expect to be able to start this properly in the next academic year, on the basis of the environmental calculations. Since COVID is finished, it has become easier to progress.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This financial year we expect to finalise the basic environmental data and visions for the transitions to clean energy and alternative resources from deep sea mining. To undertake the participatory deliberation we will be working with colleagues from Stanford University and the University of Queensland who we hope to visit and discuss with this year. We plan to undertake at least the first survey study this year, as well as the first stage of an online information tool.
|
Causes of Carryover |
This year we were slightly delayed obtaining the right personnel to work on lifecycle assessment and were not able to travel to meet the collaborators in the USA due to timing constraints. We expect to hire RAs and to undertake the relevant travel to meet collaborators this year, as well as to start constructing the online tools for the participation activities that are the core of this research.
