Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During AY 2021, the following project goals were achieved: 1. Online interviews were conducted with 42 technical interns; the data has been compiled and is being cleansed and prepared for presentation in academic fora and for publication. 2. Online interviews were conducted with 2 labour recruitment companies and 2 businesses employing technical interns to get the demand-side perspective regarding technical interns as foreign labour. 3. A project website was started to disseminate information, allow related researchers to access project materials and share their own research results, and provide a platform for online surveys to current and former technical interns. https://www.foreignlabourandthefutureofjapanresearchandresourcespage.com/ 4. An online survey similar to the in-depth interview template was developed using Qualtics online survey tool. The survey is currently in the pilot test phase. https://gsid.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_daFd07IH7juv3GC 5. Researchers in Japan working in related fields were contacted and invited to give special seminars online at the Graduate School of International Development, Nagoya University.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Data collection from interviews has progressed more quickly than anticipated. While some target nationalities are still under-represented, Vietnam and Myanmar have been completed. The only part of the original research design that has not been started is a broad-based public opinion survey, but that will be the main goal for AY 2022.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
1. Use the online survey to gather a larger quantitative data base. 2. Complete in-depth interviews with approximately 63 technical interns. 3. Commission and implement the public opinion survey. 4. Begin presenting preliminary results in academic fora and publish one single-authored and two co-authored papers.

Causes of Carryover |
It is anticipated that as with the first year of the project the majority of costs will be to contracted personnel for language-related services (translation and interpretation). With the relative easing of COVID-19-related travel restrictions the researcher may incur some travel costs to take part in domestic and international academic activities.
