Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study was based on an interest in the original source(s) of `Esopo no Fabulas', and primarily reexamined Aesop's fable collections around 16th-century Europe. The main results of the reseach are as follows: (1) We investigated the nature of early modern printed editions of Phaedrus' collection, particularly the so-called `editio princeps', and explored features unique to that period. (2) We analyzed the relationship between illustrations and text in the 1610 edition of Aesop's collection (known as the Nevelet edition), and revealed complex dynamics influenced by publishing practices of the period. These results clarified (though partly) on aspects and diffusion of printed Aesop collections, especially during the late 15th century to the early 17th century.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
