Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
All the necessary data were collected from the Balanced Corpus of Written Japanese and the Japanese word-association data set reached more than 650000 responses. Preliminary results of the mental lexicon investigations were reported and discussed at the Digital Humanities 2022 and the Linguistic Society of New Zealand annual conferences. The general progress of the mental lexicon part of the project from the Japanese studies point of view will be reported at the European Association for Japanese Studies, and spatial description in Japanese from the cognitive linguistics standpoint will be discussed in the paper for the International Cognitive Linguistics Conference. For the spontaneous speech experiment, the development of the software was finished so that it is ready for the data collection.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Data collection and analysis for the investigation of the mental lexicon in both word association form and corpus are advancing as planned. The temporal and spatial description investigation part of the study was delayed due to the pandemic-related issues at the beginning of the project. Among them were difficulties in the development of the platform for the experiment and postponement of the conferences such as the International Cognitive Linguistics Conference, which was postponed for several years. During the preparation for the study, it was also uncovered that it is more efficient to conduct the spontaneous speech experiment in a hybrid form. The study was redesigned so that participants can participate online or in person depending on their preference and need for assistance.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Currently, we are writing a paper on time and space in Japanese and English mental lexicons based on the corpus and word association material. At the same time, the final preparations for the spontaneous speech experiment are made. It will commence in Japan in July and in the UK in October. The data is planned to be collected, transcribed, and organized by the end of the financial year.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The spontaneous speech experiment was redesigned for the hybrid form and it will be conducted partially in person in Japan and in the UK. The material will be collected and the personnel expenditure for transcription and organisation of the data will occur. These expenses plus Miscellaneous such as experiment advertising materials are estimated at around 1835000 JPY. Travel expenses of around 500000 JPY for the International Cognitive Linguistics conference in Germany and field-work in the UK will occur in this fiscal year.
