Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
A study abroad (SA) motivation questionnaire was administered in Japan and the findings were triangulated with an interview with a program organizer to shed light on Japanese students' experiences in non-English speaking countries in English-medium programs (EMI) from various perspectives. In order to contrast students' experiences, additional interviews were conducted with Japanese students who studied in other non-English speaking countries in EMI programs. The results were presented at a national conference in Fukui, Japan. Future research project will involve further data collection from students and teachers with the administration of the SA motivation questionnaire in Hungary to compare the results with data collected in Japan.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
There was an initial delay due to COVID-19 pandemic and childbirth; however, in the current year the project is progressing according to the plan.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Meetings with study abroad program organizers in Hungary are scheduled and Japanese students in Hungary will be asked to fill out the study abroad motivation questionnaire which was piloted in the previous year, in Japan. Students will be asked to give interviews after the questionnaire data were processed and analysed to gain further understanding of their responses about their study abroad experiences in degree-seeking EMI programs at Hungarian universities. The results of the investigation will be shared in the form of a presentation and publication.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Expenses for the next fiscal year remained due to the inability to travel to Hungary, to administer the questionnaire, because of COVID-19; therefore, research was conducted and presented in Japan in 2023. The piloted study abroad questionnaire will be administered in Hungary; therefore, the incurring amount would be used for travel expenses next year. Further usage includes honorarium for participants and a purchase of an interview transcription software. The results are planned to be shared at an international conference overseas and further travel expenses will be needed for presentation.
