Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During 2021, the following goals of the research were achieved. 1) Equipment necessary for the conducting of immigrant interviews was purchased, and a small studio was constructed in the researcher’s office. 2) 30 Interviewees from 14 in the fields of agriculture, health services, manufacturing, restaurant/hospitality, and education were contacted, and paperwork (consent forms, etc.) from all participants were secured. 3) During August 2021, 30 interviews were conducted at the researcher’s office and at various remote locations, depending on the availability of the interviewee. 4) The audio/video data for all interviews was processed and edited using Adobe Premiere Pro. 5) The construction of the online database was begun (scheduled to be completed and online in the first half of 2022).

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The creation of the database is ahead of schedule; however, the plans to present at overseas conferences have been changed due to the worldwide coronavirus situation. As a result, plans to present overseas have been modified to presentations at domestic and online conferences.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Plans for the research are as follows: 1) Completion of the database of immigrant narratives (complete with explanation of underlying pedagogy and user guide for educators) by July 2022. 2) Conducting of an additional 10 immigrant interviews during August 2022. 3) Editing and uploading of video onto database by November 2022. 4) 2022 Conference presentations (Japan Association for Nursing English Teaching: JANET, June 25; Intercultural Communication in Language Education: ICLE, September 10; Japan Association of Language Teachers: JALT, Noverber). 5) Research Publication (currently, 3 research articles submitted)

Causes of Carryover |
Interview subjects were less then expected due to coronavirus situation. These interviews will be carried out in the current fiscal year.
