Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY 2022, I managed to obtain new documents and literature about Swiss-Japanese relations during WWII and create notes and a much deeper understanding of the bilateral relationship of the two countries. The document and data review process has proceeded well and I can now focus on creating the analysis of the of it and work on synthesising the emerging results in textual form. There still a few pieces missing, especially when it comes to Switzerland's censorship program during the 1940s, but I am hopeful I can resolve these questions in the next fiscal year. My exchange with Japanese researchers has in addition rendered new insights about the role of the diplomatic counterparts of the Swiss legation in Tokyo and Karuizawa, which is an unexpected development, but a welcome insight. I will have to do some more research on some key Japanese diplomats, which might render more insights about the way the Gaimusho perceived Swiss legation and maybe also protected against other agencies like the Kempeitai. This hypothesis will take up some more time for me to follow up.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
I have yet to find materials about Switzerland's censorship and if there were any connections to the Japanese Empire or not. But I hope that I can answer these last questions in the last FY of the project and then write the manuscript of the book as planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The research this year should be going well as I will mainly need to create the book manuscript from the information already gathered and reviewed. I have to solve some more questions that I would like to further research in Swiss and Japanese archives but even if no documents can be found, I will be able to draw conclusions based on the available materials.

Causes of Carryover |
There was no need to use the entire fund this fiscal year as I could achieve my research goals with lesser money. I would therefore like to carry the rest forward to the third year.
