Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purposes of this research are to 1) understand the nature of indigenous socio-cultural values and agrarian practices in Okinawa; 2) to examine the land use regulations and the process of restoration and resurgence; 3) to identify the correlation between land-based activism and indigenous rights recognition of the community. This study seeks to link Okinawan cultural politics and social movements and sheds light on practices that constitute a less acknowledged form of indigenous resurgence.
The research in FY2022 involved mainly conducting field research. In the summer of 20222, I collected archival materials and conducted interviews in Okinawa. I visited prefectural archives and libraries to collect the necessary historical materials. I was able to locate documents on land seizure by the US military and newspaper articles about peoples’ resistance at that time. Secondly, I asked people who are currently engaged in agriculture to participate in the research and interviewed them. I analyzed the interview data and drafted a paper. Thirdly, I presented the paper at a research meeting at Kanagawa University. With the comments from the audience, I was able to deepen the idea for the construction of the academic book that I am aiming to publish as a research result.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research in 2022 was mainly field research. I was able to conduct sufficient field research during the summer. I was able to expand the range of interviewees for this research, and with the cooperation of these interviewees, I was able to obtain new insights and analyze them. Since I was also able to write and report a paper in an internal research group, I reflect that the research has progressed well as planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
FY 2023 is the final year for this research project. I would like to focus on organizing, analyzing, and writing based on the materials I have collected so far. In particular, I would like to make progress in analysis and preparing a manuscript. I plan to organize a workshop to exchange opinions with international scholars in the field and work on theorizing new knowledge about indigeneity in Okinawa.
|
Causes of Carryover |
It did not make sense to use the small amount for something else. I would like to use the left amount for the purchase of necessary academic books and expenses for a workshop, which I plan to host in 2023.
