Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
2021 - Phase I: Preparations (1) Build on earlier findings to improve & develop the framework that was designed for the learning system. This has been mostly completed but is ongoing for improvement. Further investments were made to expand the reading and instructional material. (2) Evaluate online platforms & negotiate/ upgrade current online services. This has been mostly completed, with a slight delay due to COVID-19. A PC was upgraded and online services were obtained to augment the previous system. Further additions will be needed in the current year. (3) Obtain final permissions from the institution and participants - is completed and consent forms were designed. (4) Deploy course for research purposes (limited to LMS: Manaba). Trial with limited group of participants (ten Japanese-basis students) is currently in progress. (5) Additional software development to improve the online social learning component Delayed as a result of COV ID-19 and institutional delays. (6) A CQ training license was obtained from the CQ Center and an account was created to perform analyses. (7) Analyse & report: this is still continuing but one publication was successfully done, while three conference presentations were also delivered.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Most of 2021 plans & goals have been achieved, or completed. Goal (5) was delayed due to COVID-19 in its impact on the learning environment. Plans are currently in slow progress to confirm the trial of a new LMS.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Phase II: Reflect, Adjust & Deploy(2022) (1)Build on earlier findings and confirm the trial of a new LMS.(2)Invite review of preparations from academic sector (GSIS, Kumamoto University), confirm other external developer support (CQ Institute) (3)Evaluate, renew & upgrade online services (where necessary). (4)Deploy main research phase: all participants (5)Analyse & report findings: conferences & publication. (6)Aim for LMS design & development.

Causes of Carryover |
Slightly more than half of the previous year's (2021) budget was used. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the travel allowance and budget could not be utilised. Efforts will be made this year to use the remainder of the 2021 budget, as well as the allocation for 2022. Adjustments will include (1) the acquisition of further equipment (late 2022 models): tablet with accessories and 1 laptop with appropriate statistical analysis software (NVivo) (2) further training (CQ Center) and statistical analysis training (NVivo) and (3) use of travel allowance for 2 international conferences (ICoME, Hawaii, Aug. 3-5) and International Conference on Education System and Creativity ICESC on February 25-26, 2023 in Sydney, Australia
