Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I examined the effect of autistic traits on color-shape associations. Through two behavioral performance tasks, I found that participants with higher AQ scores showed stronger circle-red and triangle-yellow associations tested by feature binding task and IATs. Moreover, the congruency effect of color-shape associations on feature bindings and behavior performances observed in previous studies were replicated. The effect of autistic traits on color-shape associations are opposite to the hypothesis. Some color-shape associations may be partially explained by structural correspondence hypothesis.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Because of the covid-19, it was difficult to recruit participants. So far, I have conducted two behavioral experiments examining the effect of autistic traits on color-shape associations by feature bindings and IATs. Some tendency of the effect of autistic traits was observed. Participants with higher AQ scores showed stronger bindings of associations, and the reasons explaining these findings are under consideration.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In future study, I will recruit participants with visual deficits and participants diagnosed with ASD to examine the effect of developmental disorders on the color-shape associations.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The study need the funding for doing experiments on color-shape associations in developmental disorders. In the next fiscal year, I plan to recruit participants with developmental disorders (e.g., ASD; Blind participants), to do experiments on color-shape associations using both explicit(e.g., questionnaire survey) and implicit(e.g., computer-based behavior task) methods. I plan to buy some experimental equipments(e.g., 3D printer) and programming/analyzing softwares for the experiments among participants with developmental disorders. The funding will also be used for publication fee.
