Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We accomplished our research targets for FY2022. We captured the chaotic flow response of a dilute polymer solution in complete three-dimensions (3D), an instability known as elastic turbulence (ET). We related the evolution of ET to elastic stress as a competition of vessel-scale pockets of instability leading to increased pressure drop, generating insights relevant to fluid mechanics in general and to porous media flow in particular. Furthermore we deployed the measurement technique (micro-tomographic particle image velocimetry) to develop a novel microfluidic extensional rheometer.
