2023 Fiscal Year Research-status Report

Global-to-Regional Urban Climate Change Assessment and Modeling (GRUCCAM)

Research Project

Project/Area Number 21K14249
Research InstitutionTokyo Institute of Technology

Principal Investigator

バルケズ アルビンCG  東京工業大学, 環境・社会理工学院, 准教授 (30754783)

Project Period (FY) 2021-04-01 – 2025-03-31
KeywordsGlobal urban climatology / Urban Climate / GIS Database / GIS dataset construction
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We have successfully published our work on simulating the present and future climate of 43 largest megacities on an international journal. Furthermore, two domestic papers were also published in the prestigious Japan Society of Civil Engineers journal. The first domestic paper focuses on a more recent climate-change scenario (CMIP6). The second paper is a deep-learning-based land cover generator from satellite images needed for the urban parameterization. We have presented 4 research works in the 11th International Conference on Urban Climate. Lastly, we are considering air-conditioning as an adaptive measure, coupling air quality.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Although it seems that the project is progressing smoothly after successfully presenting our findings on modelling of both urbanization and climate-change effects in publications and international conferences, we have not finalized the model for the updated global urban morphological datasets needed for the project. We have also added another general circulation model (GCM) for investigation because of the lack of manpower/support for the original model. The GCM (NICAM model) is based in Japan. This shift strengthened collaboration and speed up our work. We are also currently experiencing slight delay due to the upgrade of Tokyo Tech's Supercomputer. However, thanks to the upgrade, we expect faster simulation times and, hence, lower simulation costs.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

This year, our model will be publicly available and merged with the official Weather Research & Forecasting model. A paper on our findings on the global climate model will be submitted to a prestigious applied meteorology journal. The results will be presented in the upcoming Japan Geophysical Union in May and the American Geophysical Union in December. Domestic papers are also being drafted together with the students that include improved models for the urban parameters (i.e. roughness parameters and anthropogenic heat) that is due on May. With the help of another collaboration with University of Tokyo and Waseda University, we are investigating the potential of air-conditioners as an adaptation strategy based on the current GRUCCAM project.

Causes of Carryover

To compensate for the lack of budget in the final year, the previous year's budget was shifted to this year. The project findings in the final year need extra funding to present the study on international and domestic conferences. Around 4 students will be submitting their related works for the upcoming Japan Society of Civil Engineers Conference. Around 3 of my team will also be presenting in the American Geophysical Union. Consideration for the devaluation of the Japanese yen is also considered. Climate and AI Model simulations using the Tsubame 4.0 are also to be expected in this year.
