Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This project was restarted after being granted a period of leave to the PI, and the duration from the restart date has been close to 8 months plus. Thus the reportable progress is a little less than can be expected for the next year. However, significant progress has been made in regards to Objective 2, with insights from international perspectives as well. Ongoing research with Thailand, which also has a high tsunami prone region has reinforced the importance of this research and designation systems for land-use. However the expected requirements can be quite different compared to Japan due to contexts of the affected region and its economic structure. This insight and the relevant factors has been one of the achievements of this research term. In particular, we have been able to do in-depth analysis on Objective 2 which is "incorporate spatial optimization and land-use management criteria in optimization model" 2(a) and 2(b) based on the above insights. Publications and conference presentations regarding these results are expected in this year.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Since the project was restarted after being granted a period of leave to the PI, the progress has been a little delayed but is expected to be caught up within the next term.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Next phase is the Objective 3 and the iterative improvement of Objective 1. Objective 3(b) "usability-based analysis" maybe conducted in two places (Japan and Thailand) due to ongoing collaboration with Thailand, and as a result we may be able to output Objective 3(c) "good criteria for designation settings" for both countries/regions, which would be an added achievement. At the same time, due to the inclusion of insight from Thailand, Objective 2 also needs to be iteratively improved for the optimization system to work for both Japan and Thailand. Also publication on the outputs from this term's research is under progress in regards to Objective 2.

Causes of Carryover |
A conference attendance and publication fee is planned for this year. Other expenses are mostly for necessary consumables and personnel expenditure for programming and other research support.
|
Remarks |
The counterpart of this research is the Regional Network Of Urban Safety (RNUS) center in Asian Institute of Technology as well as tsunami research group from Mahidol university.
