Outline of Final Research Achievements

30 cancer patients: head and neck (12), lung (5), colon (4), pancreas (3), breast (2), oesophagus (2) duodenum (1), bile duct (1) 25 patients had periodontal disease In 31 non-cancer patients 17 patients had periodontal disease These patients were divided into four groups: non-cancer patients without periodontal disease (14), non-cancer patients with periodontal disease (17), cancer patients without periodontal disease (5) and cancer patients with periodontal disease (25). In multivariate analysis, the presence of cancer in IL-6 and periodontal disease in cancer patients had a significant effect. in T-reg, both cancer and periodontal disease had a significant effect on the proportion in the peripheral blood.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

過去の報告において、歯周病患者ではがんの発生が多いことや歯周病を有する患者でがんの死亡率が高いことが報告されており、最近の報告では、歯周病を有する者は有しない者に比べて末梢血中の制御性T細胞(Treg)の数が有意に多いことが報告された。これらの報告から歯周病によりTregの増加などが誘導されることで免疫監視機能が低下し、がんの発生、増殖に関与している可能性があると考えられた。我々の行った研究でも、癌と歯周病の存在が相乗的に末梢血内のT-regとIL-6を増加させ、癌における免疫抑制と免疫回避の根本的な原因の1つである可能性が示唆され、歯周病の予防が癌発生を抑制させる可能性が示唆された。
