Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I presented at two international conferences. One topic was to analyze and report on the outcomes of a virtual reality workshop (VR). I presented the results of using VR in a collaboration on design workshop at the ICCE2021. Another research presentation at CollabTech2021 focused on improving cultural difference detection(CDD) to support multilingual workshops. This paper describes the improved cultural difference detection method that will be used to warn of cultural-based misunderstandings in intercultural design workshops. Aside from publications, I conducted one questionnaire-based experiment to be used as a cultural difference measure. In addition, I also designed and conduct an experiment on multilingual chat data to look for effective facilitation pattern.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We carried out two experiments as planned. One was an annotation to look for effective facilitation methods. Another was to create a measure for cultural difference in machine translation based communication. Besides the difficulties to look for effective facilitation methods from chat log data , we can publish a part of the results.
However, there are still some issues that could impede research progress in the coming year. Other difficulties include the development of a virtual reality space, which takes time and effort, as well as the search for participants with specific language skills. For example, we have been looking for Americans who are unfamiliar with Japanese language and culture, but this has proven difficult because the Japanese border is still closed due to COVID-19 situation.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In AY2022, I intend to conduct the following research: 1) Conduct experiments to validate the results of the annotation (effective facilitation method). Based on the findings, we can create an intelligent facilitator in the future. 2) Based on the results of the cultural difference detection measure, conduct experiments on cultural difference in MT-mediated communication. In addition to a controlled experiment, I intend to collaborate with a Thai school and a Japanese after-school to collect real communication data from children in both countries. 3) Continue developing a virtual reality space for intercultural collaboration, including the addition of voice-based and text-based machine translation to the system, as well as the provision of a smart whiteboard and sticky notes.

Causes of Carryover |
It was impossible to travel due to COVID-19 situation, so we focused on the experiment instead. That is why the amount of fund was carried to the next year.
