Outline of Final Research Achievements

As the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism has set as its next target in the FY 2020 revision of the Barrier-Free Japan Act, barrier-free access for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, especially those disabilities are less visible, is urgently needed to facilitate their mobility.
This study focused on "understandability" for people with intellectual disabilities, autistic spectrum disorders, and developmental disabilities, and clarified the conditions necessary for pictogram design on signs as a basic research for constructing a sign system design that is inclusive of various disability characteristics and facilitates movement for each disability type.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ピクトグラムをどの様なデザインにすることで知的障害・自閉スペクトラム症・発達障害を有する人にとって理解しやすいものになるのか、そのデザイン要素について明らかにした研究は少なく、一方バリアフリーの観点から早急に対策が求められる課題であることから、社会的意義は高い。また移動等を円滑化にするための公共案内表示（サイン）上のピクトグラムを、知的障害・自閉スペクトラム症・発達障害を有する人がどの様に見ているのか、明らかにした研究も少ない。本研究成果を今後開校予定の特別支援学校のサインとして実装する。今後のサイン、ピクトグラム研究の発展、また教育施設におけるサインデザインに高く寄与すると考えられる。
