Outline of Final Research Achievements |
With the aim of clarifying the process of Japanese people's understanding and reception of foreign religions in modern times, the researcher analyzed how modern Japanese intellectuals came to know and understand Islam by collecting and reviewing prewar books, magazines, and other publications and deciphering their descriptions. The researcher also compared the contents of the writings of each of these intellectuals. Through this research, it was found that the understanding of Islam by most intellectuals from the early Meiji to Taisho periods was based on translations of European literature in Islamic studies, not on direct knowledge of Islam from Muslims. However, it was also made clear that they have obtained information on Islam directly from Muslims since the interwar period and have relied on their own beliefs and religious views to understand Islam.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
