Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Literature on great power rivalry and data on U.S. and Chinese activities such as military and development aid in Marawi City were collected. Due to the pandemic-related travel restrictions, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the help of a local research collaborator based in Mindanao. Fifteen (15) interviews were conducted, including local officials, academics, and NGO workers. The respondents were asked about their local perceptions of American and Chinese involvement in rehabilitating Marawi City. The preliminary data shows that the perspective of the people from Marawi about American and Chinese presence in the region is influenced by Muslim Mindanao's relations with the national capital, Manila, and their socio-political and cultural contexts, which was integrated into the proposed theoretical framework of using local perspectives to understanding great power rivalry in the region. The PI was invited to be a commentator in a webinar where she discussed the theoretical framework and its contribution to international relations and Asian studies. Parts of the research were also presented at an international conference. The project was also accepted for presentation at an international academic conference.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The research was delayed and modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Further interviews/fieldwork will be conducted. The preliminary findings will be presented at an international academic conference in July. The final output will be in a form of publication.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the research plan was not wholly. The PI was initially intended to travel to Mindanao for data-gathering. Even with a local research collaborator, Mindanao was also hit badly by the pandemic, making the interview schedule unpredictable. Because of the delay in data-gathering, there were limitations in the proceeding with writing and presenting the final research output as the PI does not have findings to submit to conferences and journals. The remaining amount (346,368 yen) will be used for the following:1) If travel conditions allow, the PI is planning to go to Mindanao to further conduct interviews and gather data. This will be done with the help of a research assistant who will help with the interview transcription and translation; 2) Purchase of books, especially recent publications about U.S.-China rivalry, and of materials that will aid in the dissemination of research results; 3) Attendance in an international conference and publication costs.
