Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of this project is to characterize the dense active system e.g. bacterial bath and investigate its micro and macroscopic properties. We specifically intend to build a model experimental system that can be used to study them. To begin with, we focussed on developing the model experiments and we successfully set up the optical tweezer. In the process, we recently discovered that at the high density the bacterial cells exhibit the kinetically arrested phase. We intend to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of these phases as a function of various physical control parameters (density, confinement and mobility).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We would like to measure the activity driven effect and bulk properties (e.g. viscosity) of the bacterial dispersion using an optical tweezer. At the moment we had set up the single trap optical tweezer and tested it with standard specimens such as a tracer particle in an active bath. Our experimental set up is yet to be calibrated for the robust measurement, and we are still working on it and troubleshooting the technical difficulties.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For a time-dependent study of the bacterial system, we intend to calibrate the optical tweezer and augment the Galvanoscanner that will allow us to investigate the dynamics at a short time interval. Our optical tweezer is still not complete, in the coming fiscal year we plan to purchase the optical turret, and an intensity modulator for controlling laser intensity.

Causes of Carryover |
We plan to buy an equipment for our experiments, because we are waiting for the feedback from the experiments.
